PeaceWatercolour on Arches 140 lb CP paper. Image size 11" (28 cm) by 15" (38.1 cm) © 2002This is an imaginary scene of peace and tranquility that we like to associate with the Christmas season. It was painted specifically for my annual greeting card in 2002. A 45-year-old maple in my back garden provided the model for the tree, which bears the scars of lightning strikes and other trauma that it has experienced in its lifetime. The rolling countryside in the background is typical of the Caledon hills a few kilometres north of my home. The farmhouse is a 1½ storey building that could be found almost anywhere in southern Ontario. The materials of fabrication, in this case partly dressed stone and cut quoins, varied with availability, and the skills of the pioneers who constructed the buildings. Many immigrants were trained craftsmen before they arrived in Canada to become farmers. Picture status - Available.
