Watercolour on Arches 140 lb CP paper.  Image size 11" (28 cm) by 15" (38.1 cm) © 2000

The model for the old building in this picture was the mill at Glen Williams, just a short distance north of Georgetown in Ontario. In its original form, the mill was operated by a water wheel in the stream at the rear of the structure. In recent times, the remains of the mill's mechanisms have been removed and the building itself extensively restored. It now houses an arts community in the many sections into which the interior has been divided.

In this painting, the mill is shown in its revival colours but as a symbol of earlier times, and in a festive mood. Some artistic license has been taken with building details and the surrounding landscape features but the general layout remains the same.

No mill, at any time, could be complete without a dog or cat wanting to go either in or out. The model for our canine friend in this case was "Meg", a young tri-coloured sheltie. She appeared characteristically, as was frequently the case, on the wrong side of the door.

This picture was used for my Christmas cards in 2000.

Picture status - In a private collection.
